synopsis

Based on Brecht’ The Good Woman of Sechuan and a Korean folk tale.

In a town all young woman moved to the city. So, many men cannot marry.  There is a tournament to get married to the ugly city girl. The woodcutter looses and the gods take pity on him. They tell him that when the angels come to bathe he should hide their feathers and the angel would have to stay. This is how heavenly woman come to town. The mayor wants to develop the town by cutting wood and building a bridge.  The town gets prosperous for a while, and heavenly woman is good to everyone giving gifts and her body to many lonely man. The mayor and the police are corrupted and the relations in the town deteriorate, many go to prison.  Heavenly woman takes upon herself the misery, corruption, and desires of all the villagers and finally kills herself. 

artistic statement

When constructions happen in Korea, many people rejoice but the way of life in the countryside is lost and nature gets destroyed. Kim Kwang Lim questioned the efficiency of capitalism, created for the “pursuit of happiness”, it actually makes people slave to time, to each other, and to money.  The suicide of the heavenly woman will not change the course of Korea, a country where angels cannot survive. Byun Jung Joo turns the play into a “gut” for the heavenly woman (shaman ritual for the dead).
